Debbie Prosser comments that earthenware is the most commonly found clay all over the world, incredibly tolerant to a huge variety of mixtures and firings. For the pots included in 'Red' all the clay bodies are based on Valentine's smooth earthenware. "To this I have added china clay waste and calcined shale. Making the most of the pots on the wheel, or from slabs of clay, coating with white slip, sgraffitti line drawing and/or painted with oxides and under-glaze colours before firing. All my work is raw or once fired. I began making 'slipware' (before under glazes were available), and to this day love the freshness of decorating with slips" Each batch of work has its own theme, story, purpose and inspiration.
